* “Hurrah! Ubuntu 6.10 is here”

After FC 6 release, ubuntu 6.10 too is released today. As expected, the ubuntu has done a extremely fine job. Notable ones are Wikinotes application Tomboy, F-spot – the new photo manager.
Apart from that the significant major upgrades are Open Office 2.0.4,Firefox 2.0 etc.

Speed is vastly improved. After using it u don’t get the feeling of an unfinished product. Everything is well thought, look and feel is extremely good as always.

The awwwwwwwwwkkk feeling which you get after using fedora screens, suddenly vanishes after seeing ubuntu. GNOME ( and Linux in general ) can be beautiful too. :-)

just check <a href=”http://www.ubuntu.com”>http://www.ubuntu.com</a> for the grrrrrrrreatest linux distribution.

* “Fedora Core 6 Final Released”

The latest version of Fedora Core 6 has been just released, hours ago. Though i am slackware user, and ubuntu fan. But as i was a user of Fedora too, till FC 3, so i am still interested in seeing that this distribution is back on its legs to withstand the new storm of ubuntu. That is, we all wish that they have fixed the goof-ups made in FC3 and esp FC4 and FC5. Though i had used a few betas FC6, but still i am hoping for better stability than FC4 and 5.

Though many people claim that as Fedora is meant as Test-bed for RHEL and has only 6 months release cycle. But this has no excuse for crapiness and unprofessional project management. Slackware, Ubuntu etc having 6 months release cycle have proved to be a stable platform.

Earlier many users were using enterprise softwares, which were only compatible with Redhat distribution. These organisations could neither afford risks to deploy them on unstable Fedora and nor wished to spend bucks on RHEL, and hence they had moved to CentOS.

So, the stability of FC is very important goal.

But anyway, for the interested ones, u can find the changes in latest release (click) here

Though the GUI polishing is still not up to the level of ubuntu. And it still crawls when compared in speed with respect to Slackware 11, but still it delivers a better product than FC4 and FC5.
Just start your torrent clients at the earliest , as servers are heavily busy.

Update (1 day later): find a great FC 6 review (click) here

* “Agreement between Sun and Microsoft”

Regarding this Sun and Microsoft agreement to collaborate, i also
think that it is a very good news for corporations.
But the hype is again at work at full time in IT as
always. Though it is very good and welcome news , but
it is not such of a big proportion as it is being made
out to be.

Earlier also, MS and Sun products were capable to talk
to each other, like using web services J2EE and .NET
sw can easily communicate. Even without webservices,
many COM bridge are there, so we can always do it
directly also. Also, in the given example, if we are
implementing LDAP standard without any propreitary
extensions (which is the ideal way to do also), then
our LDAP apps are always able to talk to each other,
whatever platform they are on. The only new scenario,
i can think it to be very useful, may be like ADS and
Sun LDAP themselve talk and merging into each other,
not the apps, then it is good, but we should think how
practical it is and how many deployments of such
nature will be there in corporations. Say, some LDAP
authentication from Sun server and some LDAP
authentication from MS-ADS inside the same
organisation. Generally, if one organisation has
invested in MS-ADS in a big way ( across the
organisation), then they will not goto Sun ONE, for no
benefit of all. When the java apps can actually use
MS-ADS. And even it is vice-versa true. Yes,
organisation can switch from Sun ONE or MS-ADS to
OpenLDAP for a very large number of benifits (apart
from zero cost) that are pretty obvoius. Which can be
easily accessed by apps from MS and Sun stable. They
are feeling threatened and pulling up their stocks
against this linux threat as it happenning in many
cases for LDAP.

I am just taking LDAP as an example; many such
other touted benefits , when taken on ground reality
existing in corporate world deployments, can be found
to be not of that much benefit.

Yes , The thing is that now it will be easier and
out of the box interoperability and less headaches ,
webservices tags may itself get somewhat standardized
between the two parties, it should be welcomed. But it
should not be given the hype to which it is not worth.
It is of much good news for developers and
administrators. BASICALLY AND PRACTICALLY IT IS A GOOD
NEWS FOR INFRASTRUCTRE S/W AND WEBSERVICES ONLY

LIFE COULD BE MORE EASIER FOR DEVELOPERS, IF THEY
CAN AGREE TO VITAL CORE ISSUES. NOT THE ISSUES ON
SURFACE ONLY.MS-Windows core, which .NET runtime is
enjoying, so that java apps can have also the same
benefits and performance. But this will not be agreed
by MS. Life will be much easier for developers, if Sun
learns from jikes and optimise its slow compiler. Most
importantly, Ms is again hijacking the idea of XUL and
designing its own XAML, the world for developers would
have been better if sun and MS could provide
compatible XUL implementation rather than inventing their own wheel.
I think this last point is going to very vital in the
time to come, after release of longhorn. But no, they
cant accept any standard from other stable, esp. when
that wise-spread standard has been devised by linux
and alike communities like that of Mozilla. Ok, if it
is their biz policy, then why they are not doing
agreeing to these core issues, when they pretend to
have so much concern for the developers(like on
interoperability). Rather than implementing jscript
(so called standard- jscript) for IE, why didn’t MS
implemented Java script in whole as standard, so that
one can not think of IE model and Netscape model
differently while coding. They will always take the
standards and make mess out of it for developers. Why
they do this in the first place, when they have to
talk for interoperability later. When MS has to
implement SMB then why cant it employ it as in
standard, without twisting it here and there,When it
can be implemented in full standard, without any
issue.

In any case, whatever be it, it is better than
nothing, and only future will tell, till how much this
interoperability will go. By the way, something exciting
can be thought of (which is not possible , but just
imagine) like “DIRECT” interoperability between java
and .NET apps at the platform level, even without
webservices etc.

* “Hype and Reality of .NET vs Java”

M$ has created such a hype of .NET over Java, that some are confused.
This is just effect of $Marketing-deptt$ of M$, only this deptt. is
actually good in M$.

They are borrowing a lot from Java, and then they embark on their so called revolutionary language independence of .NET. I thought it a well deserved point to clear all this confusion, when i saw this hype stuff again on some websites.

Huh…….the language independence of .NET , not a *NEW* big deal. There usual goodies in java over .NET of which u will find lists and
lists everywhere. I am just touching one most misunderstood case of
lang independence of .NET, which is just a marketing hype. U remember
these MS-folks sold almost the same old controls technology in a new
wrapper as New Ground breaking ActiveX tech by creating a marketing
hype. Huh! Right from the days when i have seen MS-folks started
boasting of “Language Independent” .NET which is not available in Java,
i have just laughed at them. So when i saw, on your site that .NET is
so-called lang independent , then i could not stop myself to put the
java’s case justifiably here.Any thinking person will be certainly able to appreciate that as C# is
a language, VB.NET is a langugage, and so on. All of them compile to an
executable file (say .EXE or other format etc.) which will run on a
.NET runtime. Or like in ASP , the ASP engine will interprete the asp
code running with help of .NET runtime. Here .NET runtime is just
analogous ( i am not saying “same” ) to JVM (Java Virtual Machine). In the same way, Java is a language, which compiles to .CLASS (or sums
upto .jar,.war etc…) and this .CLASS file runs on JVM. There are many
languages available like jython(see jython.org), JScheme, JBasic, JPerl
etc. which compile either there executable into .CLASS which you can
run directly on JVM (using “java” command ) OR the Interpreter of these
langs will themselves run on JVM and then interpreting the source code
file of that lang. SO, WE CAN SAY THAT JAVA IS A LANGUAGE ( JUST AS A
C# AND VB.NET AND VC.NET ETC.) BUT JVM IS LANG INDEPENDENT (JUST IN THE
SAME SENSE AS .NET RUNTIME IS LANGUAGE INDEPENDENT ).and this small newborn kid .NET is making a hullabaloo of this small
feature, whereas java (rather jvm) has this all from right from
beginning of alpha version of java.

To have a small list of Languages implemented in java/ running on jvm, goto

http://grunge.cs.tu-berlin.de/~tolk/vmlanguages.html

OR,http://www.robert-tolksdorf.de/vmlanguages

.NET runtime must even not be knowing that this many of langs exist(the
list of .NET capable is small ), which java’s jvm already has running.
